How to Create a Mini Home Apothecary

When I first moved into the cottage, I knew I wanted to create a dedicated space for all my apothecary items—jars of herbs, tea accessories, and everything I needed to create herbal crafts and tea blends.

We have a very limited amount of space in our kitchen, so I decided to make a mini apothecary cabinet to keep everything organized in one place. Since sharing my home online, I’ve gotten so many requests from fellow herbalism enthusiasts who would like to create a similar space in their own homes, so in this blog post, I’m sharing everything I used to create my mini apothecary!

APOTHECARY SHELF

I thrifted my mini wicker apothecary shelf from Facebook marketplace, and I haven’t been able to find the exact cabinet online. However, I’ve found some fantastic options for similar mini cabinets that would be great for a home apothecary:

JARS

I have an ever-growing collection of jars in my home—it’s a bit of an obsession, to be completely honest! However, when it comes to storing herbs, I find that you can never really have enough jars. It’s really important to find some good, air-tight jars to keep all of your herbs organized and dry for long-term storage.

You can recycle clean, dry pasta sauce jars (or any kind of airtight jar you like) to store herbs, but there Le Parfait Jars are by far my favorite. I love the wide mouth top of the jars (which makes it easy to scoop out herbs), and they are very easy to seal and use. I also LOVE the classic orange gasket on these Le Parfait jars—they are so adorable! I have several of each size in my apothecary collection.

APOTHECARY CONTAINERS

When making herbal body care products and DIYs, I use a variety of containers to store things like essential oil blends, homemade sprays, bath teas and sachets, and tea blends. Here are some of the things I use regularly in my apothecary:

Amber Glass Bottles with Dropper

Amber Glass Bottles with Mister

Cotton Muslin Bags

Cork Top Glass Bottles

Wide Mouth Glass Jar

TEA & HERBS

It’s taken me a long time to build my collection of herbs in my apothecary. If you’re a beginner, I recommend to just start with a couple herbs and get to know them well—try them in a variety of tea blends and DIYs to get comfortable with using them—and then slowly expand your apothecary from there. Here is a list of my most-used, most-loved herbs in my apothecary:

Lavender

Rose Petals

Rose Buds

Chamomile

Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Hibiscus

Nettle

Calendula

Raspberry Leaf

Blue Cornflowers

ESSENTIAL OILS

Same as with herbs, it can take a very long time to build a collection of essential oils, so don’t feel like you need to go out and purchase a bunch of oils to start your apothecary! You can build your collection slowly over time, getting familiar with a few essential oils at a time. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below!

When using essential oils (either topically or diffusing), please make sure to do your research first. Some essential oils can irritate the skin if applied topically, and some can be dangerous for pets to breathe if diffused in your home, especially in a small room. Essential oils are highly potent so just make sure to learn about them first before using!

Lavender Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Patchouli Essential Oil

Douglas Fir Essential Oil

Rose Essential Oil

It’s taken me a few years to build my home apothecary into what it is today, and I know it will continue to evolve over time. It’s a little space of my home that brings me so much joy and inspires me to get creative and make time for myself. I hope you found this post helpful in creating your own home apothecary!
